Few people know this, but the obligation to wear seat belts also applies to those traveling in the back seats of a vehicle. Article 172 of the Highway Code states that "the driver and passengers of vehicles equipped with seat belts are obliged to wear them in any driving situation," without distinction. The administrative sanctions vary depending on the circumstances. Let's clarify. If the driver drives without a seat belt, they face a fine of between 80 and 323 euros, plus a deduction of 5 points from their license. If an adult passenger travels without a seat belt, they pay the fine but do not lose points from their license. If, however, the obligation is not respected by underage passengers, the fine is charged to the driver, unless an adult responsible for the minor (a parent, for example) is also in the car, in which case the responsibility for the violation will fall on them. If the driver is a repeat offender, their license will be suspended for 15 days to 2 months. "Fasten your seat belts," always, especially for safety!
