Turning the steering wheel? That's just the beginning

Taking a curve is not simple: turning the steering wheel is just the beginning. It's a maneuver that involves tires, the driver, and the laws of physics. To drive safely, you need to manage invisible and opposing forces by coordinating your hands, feet, and gaze.

The Physics of Curves

The first and fundamental element to consider is the curve radius. The trajectory and, above all, the speed limit depend on this geometric data. The principle is simple: centrifugal force is inversely proportional to the curve radius.

Large radius = lower centrifugal force: in a gentle curve, the outward thrust is minimal. On the Nardò experimental track, thanks to a radius of 2 km, the centrifugal force is so diluted that cars can exceed 300 km/h in total stability.

Tight radius = greater centrifugal force: in a hairpin bend, the outward thrust is maximum and severely tests the vehicle's stability.

The "Grip Budget"

Think of the tires' grip capacity as a limited budget we have available. During acceleration and braking, we use longitudinal grip to counteract forces acting on the vehicle's front-rear axis. When turning, we demand lateral grip to counteract forces acting on the vehicle sideways.

In wide curves: Tires use very little lateral grip to counteract the lateral force; there is a lot of residual "budget" to spend on speed.

In tight curves: Centrifugal force subtracts almost all available lateral grip; if the speed is not reduced, the budget runs out, and the car risks going off-road or overturning.

Managing the Curve

To best manage the forces acting on the car, you need to control

  • your gaze: do not look at the front of the car, but point your eyes towards the exit point of the curve. Where you look, the car will go.
  • your hands: in wide curves, they turn the steering wheel remaining in the basic 9:15 position; in the case of tight curves, they move according to precise techniques to avoid destabilizing the car's setup.
  • your feet: speed should be managed before entering the curve, by braking and downshifting, to adapt it to the curve.

Mastering driving techniques changes the perception of the road and allows you to anticipate dangers. When awareness and management of physical forces become acquired skills, stress behind the wheel decreases, and safety increases. True safety, in fact – as we repeat to our students – is linked to the driver's ability; where instinct can fail, technique allows you to best manage every situation.
