Revision, an important check

Correct functioning of essential components and safety of use: to ensure these two elements over time even for the most distracted motorists, the law requires periodic vehicle inspections, to be carried out at the Motorizzazione Civile (Department of Motor Vehicles) or authorized private workshops. The first inspection is 4 years after the date of first registration (by the end of the month in which the deadline falls) and then every 2 years. The main checks concern the braking system; steering; windows; electrical system; axles, wheels, tires and suspensions; chassis; exhaust gas control; seat belts; vehicle identification. If the inspection reveals critical issues or out-of-limit parameters, the owner must arrange for repairs and present the vehicle again within 1 month for a new inspection (which will have to be paid for a second time). Penalties for driving a vehicle that has not been inspected range from 170 to 680 euros, and in addition to the penalty, the vehicle is suspended from circulation until the inspection has been carried out and passed. Due to the Covid health emergency, extensions have been introduced, to be coordinated with European regulations on the matter. If the inspection expired before February 2020, the vehicle can circulate without having undergone the inspection until October 31, 2020. If the inspection expired in February 2020, the vehicle can circulate until October 31, 2020, in Italy and until September 30 in other EU countries. If the inspection expires between March 31 and August 31, 2020, the vehicle can circulate throughout the EU for seven months following the deadline set by Italian regulations.
