Attention to deadlines!

Fines ranging from 160 to 644 euros and licence revocation: these are the penalties imposed if you are caught driving with an expired licence; in the event of an accident, the situation is even more serious, as the insurance company may refuse to cover the damages. The time frame between one licence renewal and the next is set by law and varies depending on the driver's age. A brief recap: up to 50 years of age, the licence is valid for 10 years; from 51 to 70 years of age, it is valid for 5 years; between 71 and 80 years of age, it is valid for 3 years, while after 80, the licence must be renewed every 2 years. For those who want to be safe, renewal is possible 4 months before the expiration date. If you happen to leave your licence in a drawer for a long time, beware! If the document has been expired for more than 3 years, the driver will have to retake the driving test, both theoretical and practical.
