Snow socks? Approved

Approved snow socks, provided they are certified. Since November 15, 2022, snow socks can be fitted and comply with the law on roads where the use of winter equipment is mandatory. After years of uncertainty, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility has recognized their use, effectively equating them to metal snow chains.

Snow socks are a particular type of wheel cover – generally made of polyester – designed to increase tire grip on snowy road sections. They completely cover the tires and are easily applied, even in the case of tires on which chains cannot be fitted. Please note: not all models on the market comply with regulations. As indicated by a ministerial circular, only devices approved according to the UNI EN 16662-1:2020 standard, recognized as the reference standard, can be used without incurring penalties. Only in this case do they guarantee performance equal to that provided by chains.

The advantages are numerous. Snow socks take up little space in the trunk, are quiet, do not cause vibrations, and are suitable for all types of tires. They are compatible with electronic safety systems, do not damage tires and rims, and have a relatively low cost, around 50 euros. As for the drawbacks, high wear and tear should be considered if they are used improperly for long periods on snow-free road sections. It should also be remembered that the maximum permitted speed when using snow socks (or even chains) is 50 km/h.

Snow socks are easy to fit, but it's best not to improvise. It's always better to practice before finding yourself in an emergency situation. Do some tests, following the manufacturer's instructions or perhaps some reliable tutorials easily found online.

Approved snow socks, then. But they do not replace winter tires!
