In Italy, certain safety equipment is legally required, and every vehicle must carry it. The first of these accessories is the warning triangle, to be used in the event of a road accident or a vehicle on the roadway. It must be placed at least 100 meters before the hazardous point, to alert oncoming motorists. The emergency kit must also contain a high-visibility reflective vest (keep it in the passenger compartment, not the boot...), which is mandatory to wear if you get out of the car on roads outside built-up areas, in lay-bys or emergency lanes. So, beware: to place the triangle, you must wear the vest! The absence of these two accessories incurs a penalty of up to 150 euros, in addition to a two-point deduction from your driving license. In the cold season, for those traveling on certain motorway sections, winter tires or snow chains on board are also mandatory. On the "Piani e interventi" (Plans and interventions) page of the ANAS website, you can find – along with other information – the link listing all road sections affected by this obligation.
