Smoking in the car

Starting next year, the rules could change. A bill has already been tabled in Parliament introducing a ban on drivers "smoking while driving" even if they are alone in the car. Offenders face a fine of 161 euros, a deduction of 5 license points, and, in case of repeat offenses, a license suspension of one to three months. This is to protect safety, given that smoking while driving is a distraction, much like using a mobile phone. Currently, drivers are free to smoke if they are alone in the car, while the ban applies (according to a 2016 regulation) to drivers and passengers in the presence of minors and pregnant women. The fine can reach 275 euros and doubles in the presence of minors under 12 years old or visibly pregnant women.
