ACI/Istat data for the first half of 2025 show a slight decrease in accidents with injuries to people (-1.3% compared to the same period in 2024). On average, there were 455 accidents, 614 injured, and over 7 fatalities every day, which means almost 19 accidents and almost 26 injured every hour; fatalities increased on motorways (+4.4%), while decreasing on urban roads (-8.4%) and extra-urban roads (-7.1%).
The decrease represents progress towards the anticipated target of a 50% reduction in victims from 2019 to 2030, which is the objective indicated by the European Commission and also adopted by our National Road Safety Plan, but the road is still long and challenging.
The Plan adopts the Safe System approach suggested internationally in the Europe on the Move package of measures, to achieve the goal of zero road accident fatalities and serious injuries by 2050. The journey – with intermediate steps – adopts an integrated vision of road safety, with the coordinated adoption of measures relating to the quality of transport means, infrastructure, and the behavior of institutional actors and road users.
