Innovative and effective: defensive driving deepens and surpasses the technical preparation of safe driving. It is training that goes beyond simply knowing driving techniques and rules to follow. It adds to these skills a specific ability to recognize and prevent potential risk situations.
In a car, you can't rely on luck: safety behind the wheel mainly depends on the driver's skill and good driving habits. The dangers you can encounter are not only external: an unexpected obstacle, city chaos, bad weather conditions, a car problem. Emotions like stress, anger, or nervousness can also take over and lead us to engage in dangerous behaviors for ourselves and others.
Defensive driving: what are we talking about?
Defensive driving means "driving in a way that saves lives, time, and money, despite the situation we are in and the behavior of others." This is the definition from ANSI/ASSE Z15.1, the American standard for road safety. The objective is clear, therefore: to minimize the risk of accidents, caused by one's own or others' errors.
The defensive driver is trained to observe the road and recognize potentially dangerous situations in advance. They control anger and stress and adopt behaviors that "defuse" the negative emotions of others. They instinctively use effective techniques to prevent risk situations or reduce the severity of an accident. Not everyone who drives is capable and correct, but we can train ourselves to prevent dangers posed by the poor driving of others. Calmness, attention, control, concentration: these are the keywords.
Before shrugging your shoulders, convinced that you are already an excellent driver, it's better to pause for a moment. Training based only on miles driven often generates bad habits, never corrected and causes of incorrect instinctive reactions.
