We have already discussed defensive driving (read the article here), explaining what it entails: advanced training that includes, in addition to knowledge of driving techniques, a specific ability to recognize and prevent potential risk situations. Today, we highlight a couple of characteristics of the defensive driver.
Safety first and foremost – The defensive driver always maintains correct and non-aggressive behavior, thus placing themselves in a position of strength compared to bad drivers. It is important to remain calm and adopt a tolerant and cooperative attitude, compensating for the mistakes of others and avoiding tensions that could lead to dangerous behaviors. Naturally, this is within the framework of the Highway Code rules! If we have the right of way, we will not stop to yield: we would only create confusion.
The best strategy is to drive attentively and with focus. Let's adapt to the flow of traffic and avoid obstructing it. Perhaps we will be behind the wheel a few minutes longer, but we will gain in safety.
If a car wants to overtake us, let's try to make it easier. No competition! Let's avoid accelerating and make sure to leave enough space in front of us to facilitate their return to the lane. Needless to say: but without braking abruptly. If we are the ones changing lanes, remember to signal our intentions. Turn signals must always be activated well in advance.
It's not uncommon: if a horn honks insistently at us, let's avoid reacting. If the motorist gives us menacing looks or vulgar gestures, let's not take the bait. Even if we are right, let's avoid arguments and move away. Remember: driving is about getting to your destination, it's never a competition!
