In every region, there are roads where it is mandatory – from November 15 to April 15 – to have snow devices, meaning winter tires or chains on board. Winter tires offer excellent grip in difficult weather conditions, maintaining grip and stability even at sub-zero temperatures. The M+S (Mud+Snow) marking identifies both winter and all-season tires: it's better to also look for the mountain symbol with the snowflake. Chains offer good performance but are mainly recommended in case of heavy snowfall. It is important to use them correctly, practicing installation before finding yourself in an emergency. Chains are installed on the drive wheels. For all-wheel drive vehicles, front wheels are preferable to ensure traction and steerability.
What to check before departure? Naturally, the battery, lights, and heating system. Then the wipers: clean blades in good condition, a drop of antifreeze in the washer fluid. Never forget the antifreeze in the engine, essential to prevent dangerous freezing of the liquids circulating in the car's components.
