Why is the seat belt so important? In the event of a collision, an unbelted occupant will continue to move forward at the speed the car was traveling before impact. If there is no airbag or if the device does not deploy, the person will violently hit the steering wheel, dashboard, and windshield, with the risk of being ejected from the vehicle. If the airbag deploys, the force with which an unbelted person impacts the device could cause serious injuries. The most common are facial injuries: direct trauma to the bone structure, eye injuries related to wearing glasses, and indirect injuries to the retina and optic nerve. Arm and shoulder injuries are also possible. It's no better in the back seat: an unbelted passenger hits and then goes over the front seat, violently colliding with the person in the front seat. In the event of severe impacts, the sole impact against the front seat can cause very serious injuries. We will return to this important topic.
