From 2025, the driving license officially enters the digital age, becoming available to all citizens through the IO public services app. A true revolution for our habits, allowing us to always have a fundamental document at hand on our smartphone, both for driving and for identity recognition.
How it works and how to get it
The digital driving license is an electronic version of the traditional document, with the same legal validity. To obtain it, simply download the IO app, log in with SPID or CIE, and follow the instructions to generate the digital license. The app will automatically retrieve data from the Motorization Department, without the need to upload photos or scans.

Towards a European digital identity
The digital driving license is an important step towards the creation of a European digital identity wallet, the IT Wallet. While awaiting the full operational status of the system, from December 4, 2024, all users of the IO app can upload not only their driving license, but also their health card and European disability card directly to their smartphone. The digital version will have the same legal validity as physical documents and can be used in similar situations, such as police checks or at airport gates. A future where our documents will always be with us, in digital format and recognized throughout the European Union.
