“A transport system that meets society’s economic, social and environmental needs, while minimizing negative repercussions across these three systems.” The first definition of “sustainable mobility” dates back to 2006 and was coined by the European Council. Today, it is one of the main solutions used by governments worldwide to reduce pollution and protect health and the environment.
Does this only apply to public transport? Let’s look at some general figures. In Italy, transport is responsible for 50% of nitrogen oxide emissions, 13% of particulate matter emissions, and 23% of total greenhouse gas emissions. 60% of this latter percentage is attributable to cars. Therefore, the issue of sustainable mobility concerns all of us.
It is true that – as reported by the 5th edition of the White Paper, a leading publication in the smart mobility world – in 2020, vehicle registrations in Italy decreased by 28%. In other words, there were 535,000 fewer new cars on the road compared to the previous year. But it is also true, the White Paper continues, that with the pandemic, the car became the preferred mode of transport. One in two Italians considers the car the safest means of transport, while only two in five Italians use public transport.
In Italy, smart mobility is also supported by the Government: 663,710 citizens have used bonuses related to low environmental impact mobility. But if we can't switch to electric cars, we can still make a contribution. Ecodriving, or ecological driving, is a specific training that allows to reduce harmful emissions, vehicle wear, and fuel consumption. It benefits the environment and benefits drivers!
