Electric scooter? It's not difficult to ride and can be used from the age of 14. People of all ages use them to get around the city quickly and sustainably. The vehicle is basic: a platform, handlebars, a small electric motor up to 500 W. However, to use this vehicle safely, it is important to know and respect certain rules.
It works very simply. To start, you press the power button, push off a couple of times with one foot, and accelerate using the lever on the handlebars. The scooter's batteries are activated by what is called "assisted movement," a synergy between mechanical thrust (from your foot) and the electric motor. Once started, the scooter moves autonomously: just accelerate and brake with the appropriate lever. The speed limit – let's remember – is 20 km/h, which drops to 6 km/h in pedestrian areas.
So, easy. But safe? First, make sure the scooter meets the legal requirements for it to be approved for use on public roads. This means a maximum power of 0.5 kW, a horn, front and rear lights, and a speed limiter (for example, to set the maximum speed in pedestrian areas). License plates and third-party liability insurance are not required, although they may soon become mandatory according to the indications of an initial package of emergency measures being studied by the Ministry of Transport; we will return to this topic. The law also prohibits carrying people or goods and towing the vehicle.
In addition to regulatory provisions, it's good not to overlook some important tips. A helmet is only mandatory for minors, but it is advisable to wear one regardless of age: it is a protective device that can be essential in case of bumps or falls. Before venturing into traffic, it's a good idea to practice in a quiet place to get used to managing speed and evaluating braking distance. No sudden accelerations and braking, which could lead to a loss of control. When cornering: a slight turn and a slight lean of the body are enough to safely navigate every corner.
Last but not least, know the rules of the road. And always respect them.
