Engine oil: a check not to be overlooked

“Shall we check the oil?” is a question we often hear when we stop to refuel. And engine oil is indeed indispensable. We all know that it serves to reduce friction and protect mechanical parts from wear, by creating a viscous film between the contact surfaces. But it performs other functions, perhaps less known, but equally fundamental. It dissipates the heat generated by friction, helping to keep temperatures under control. It prevents the accumulation of dust and combustion residues by keeping them in suspension so they end up in the filter, thus keeping the engine cleaner. It counteracts acids, protecting internal surfaces from rust and oxidation. Therefore, changing the oil with the right frequency is important: generally, for a petrol car, the lubricant should be replaced every 15-20 thousand kilometers, and for a diesel car every 30-35 thousand kilometers. Pay attention to the specifications in the manual: they establish the minimum requirements, which means that for that type of engine, a lubricant with specifications equal to or higher than those indicated by the vehicle manufacturer is required. To ensure that clean oil circulates in the engine, do not neglect to change the filter.
