Rules exist, even if they are often disregarded. For the transport of four-legged friends, the reference is Article 169 of the Highway Code, which prohibits the "transport of domestic animals in a number greater than one and in any case in conditions that constitute an impediment or danger to driving." Yet, how many times have we seen dogs sitting on a passenger's lap, perhaps looking out the window? This behavior is not only prohibited but also dangerous. Even with a four-legged friend in the car, driving safely must remain the priority.
The seat belt
If there is only one dog, a special pet seat belt can be used. It is not enough to simply use a leash, attaching it in some more or less secure way. This is a harness that wraps around the dog's chest and attaches to the car's seat belts, with universal fasteners that can adapt to any type of vehicle. They are available in different sizes, easily found at affordable prices, but it is important to verify that they are approved. And – we add – certified. What does this mean? It means that the belt has passed a crash test, restraining and protecting the dog (and passengers) even in the event of violent impacts. Be careful, because most products on the market do not have this certification.
Carrier or divider
For the dog's greater safety, it is still better to opt for a kennel – carrier – or a divider. This solution becomes legally mandatory if two or more animals are being transported. "Transport (...) is allowed, provided they are kept in a suitable cage or container or in the rear compartment behind the driver's seat, specially divided by a net or other similar suitable means," states the Highway Code. The net, or alternative tubular structures, are installed to separate the passenger compartment and the trunk. Cages and dividers "if permanently installed must be authorized by the competent office of the Department for Land Transport."
Fines
For those who do not use safety systems, the fine ranges from 87 to 344 euros, in addition to the loss of 1 point from the driving license. In the case of unauthorized permanent devices (you must contact the Civil Motorization Office), the penalties are more severe: the fine ranges from 430 to 1,731 euros.
